Ellen was born about 1853 in Bristol, England. She was the daughter of David Davies.

Ellen was 23 and living at Winsford, Somerset when she married 27 year old draper William Yard of Clevedon, Somerset on 24 Oct 1876 at St Mary Magdalene, Winsford, Somerset. William was the son of James Yard, also a draper. Joseph George Yard and Alfred Davies were witnesses to the marriage. The marriage was registered at Dulverton, Somerset. ^{[1] [2]}
