Frederick was born in Rosewater near Port Adelaide in 1889, the 4th son and 7th of 9 children born to Matthew Nicks Davis[1] and Frances Rachel Badman[1]. He grew up on the family farm “Riverside” at Lower Light and in 1917, he married May McMurtrie at the Methodist Church in Bethany[2], near Willunga. Frederick and May had 4 children: Leslie Norman Davis (1918)[3], Betty May Davis (1921) [4], Merle Davis (1923) [5], Lillian Emma Davis (1925) [6]. He passed away on 29 September 1935[7] from tetanus which he developed following a work accident. Frederick was working on the Port Adelaide docks on September 6th where he was working in the hold of a ship attaching the slings to the hook of the crane. His hands became caught, 6 of his fingers were lacerated and the end of one finger was pulled off. Despite him being given anti-tetanic serum, he developed tetanus and died in hospital. His death was the subject of both a post mortem[8] and a coronial inquest[9] which found that whilst he didn’t exhibit all of the classical symptoms, he died from tetanus. His widow, May, was awarded £2 10/ per week workers compensation to provide for their 4 children and herself[10]. Frederick was buried in the Two Wells Cemetery on 7 October 1935)[11].
