Biography

Jehu Martin Davis was born in 1847, he passed away in 1914. As a young man he fought with Company F of the 145th Illinois Infantry in the Civil War. . His civil war records sometime appear as John Davis, probably because the ink would run on the letter "e" making it appear to be an "o", the letter "u" often looks like an "n" when writing in cursive, especially if one is expecting it to be an "n", or maybe it was just a nickname.

The affair of Jehu, ( I believe he was called Martin among the family.) and Annie was quite scandalous in the community, Martin had children that were older than Annie. Due to concerns of inheritance the children adamantly opposed any marriage of the two. So, under the pretext of a business trip the two traveled to Carroll county, Tennessee, where Annie was raised and there they were married . Such a trip was not unusual for Martin, and it was on such a trip that he first met Annie. In spite of the age difference, it was a good but short Marriage, since Martin died four years later. Martin and Annie were my grandparents. Though I never knew Martin, I heard my grandmother speak of him often and always with love and affection.
