He was dark-haired and brown-eyed, and had a well-trimmed beard. He was fairly tall in his younger days, and never attained the stoutness that was characteristic of his father. He loved to sing and pray, and was a leader in his church as well as the early brush-arbor meetings in the locale. He treated his children & grandchildren with kindness, although he was known to have a wide, firm hand at the proper time. Many anecdotes have been told about him: how he never quarreled with his wife - he whistled while she did the fussing; how he jokingly told others that he married his first wife for love, his second wife for her beauty, and his third wife because she was a good manager; others too numerous to mention. All this leads one to believe (and rightly) that he was as gentle in his teasing of those who meant the most to him as he was courteous to all. His sons inherited his ability to gently tease, and our Davises have grown up on it. (2 previous paragraphs from p. 43 Davis Family History)
