Biography

Thomas was born in Bitton, Gloucestershire in Autumn 1853.

Census returns:

1861 [1] : In the 1861 census return, as a child, Thomas is recorded as living with his family in New Swindon, Cricklade, Wiltshire. As an 8 year old, the census records that Thomas was a scholar, the son of an 'engine smith'. There are 10 people living in the household: along with his parents, Thomas is living with 7 siblings: John, Kezia, Jonas, Amilia, Thomas, Sarah Ann, Emily and James.

1881 [2] : By the time of the 1881 census, Thomas is recorded as having a family of his own, living in Clarendon Street , Kenilworth, Warwickshire. His profession is listed in the return as a certificated teacher. His wife, Harriet (Dolman) is living with him, as well as an infant son, Horace. Also living at the address is a general servant.

1891. [3] Thomas had moved to south Wales by the time of the 1891 census return, and his family had significantly expanded. The family now lived in the St Woolos parish of Newport, and Horace had several siblings: Flossie, Amelia, Roland and Percy. Thomas' profession is now listed as 'Headmaster'.

In 1901, [4] Thomas still lived with his family in St Woolos, Newport, His profession is listed as School Master.


Thomas was the headmaster of Bolt Street School, Newport. At the time, the family lived in Dolphin Street, in the Pillgwenlly district of Newport; an area known for terraced houses to home workers at the local docks. [5]
