Doctor Dame Joyce Daws DBE FRCS FRACS FAMA MB BS was an English-born Australian thoracic surgeon at various hospitals for over twenty years, primarily in Melbourne. She held the post of Consultant Surgeon of Melbourne.
Joyce Margaretta Daws was born on 21st July 1925 in Hounslow, West London, England, United Kingdom. She was the third and youngest daughter of Frederick Daws and Daisy Trotman. [1] She was the sister of Winifred (1909-) and Olive (1915-).
She was educated at Royal School for Naval and Marine Officers' Daughters (this is not prrof in itself that her father was a Royal Navy or Royal Marines officer as, by the 1930s the school was also admitting girls who were not from naval families), St Paul's Girls' School, the Royal Free Hospital.
She gained the dual medical degrees of Bachelor of Medicine (MB) and Bachelor of Surgery (BS) at the University of London, and later specialised in thoracic surgery.
In 1956, Joyce migrated to Victoria, Australia. Settling in Melbourne, she worked variously at In Melbourne she worked in the field of thoracic surgery variously at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital (1958-85), Royal Melbourne Hospital (1958-67), Prince Henry’s Hospital (1967-75) and C J Officer Brown Unit at the Alfred Hospital (1970-85).
She held Fellowships with the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Medical Association (FAMA).
In the Queen's Birthday Honours 1975, Joyce was created Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in recognition of her 'service to medicine'. [2]
She retired in 1985, aged sixty years.
