Biography

A pedigree of Boketon/Green of Boughton and Green’s Norton, Northamptonshire, stated that Sir Thomas Green, son of Sir Thomas Green and a daughter of Sir John Mablethorp, married Mary Talbot, daughter of Richard Talbot and Ankaret Strange. Thomas and Mary had two children; Thomas who married Philippa Ferrers, and Amabilia who married firstly Sir John Chetwode and secondly Sir Thomas Strange^[1]. [NB The pedigree includes a sequence of six Sir Thomas Greenes as follows: 1. Sir Thomas Greene who married a daughter of Sir John Mablethorp; 2. Sir Thomas Greene who married Mary Talbot; 3. Sir Thomas Greene who married Philippa Ferrers; 4. Sir Thomas Greene who married Matilda Throgmorton; 5. Sir Thomas Greene who married Marina Beler; 6. Sir Thomas Greene who married Jane Fogge.]

In the Talbot pedigree in the Visitation of Yorkshire it states that Mary Talbot married Sir Thomas 'Grey' (but which presumably should read Greene) of whom the Marquis of Northampton is descended^[2].

The Inquisition Post Mortem of his father Thomas Grene, Knight, took place in September, 15 Richard II [1391]^[3]. His heir was his son Thomas Grene age 22. The Inquisition also indicated that in 6 Richard II Thomas Grene [the elder] had enfoeffed others of his lands in Leicestershire and that in 13 Richard II those others had enfeoffed "Thomas Grene, his son, and Isabel, his said son’s wife". Presumably Isabel was an earlier wife of Thomas Grene.

He was sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1416. He is designated “of Green’s Norton, Boughton, Canons Ashby, Hardwick, Sewell (in Blakesley), Northamptonshire.”

Thomas Grene, Knight, of Greene's Norton, co. Northampton, died on 14 Dec 1417. His heir was his son Thomas Grene, knight, age 18^[4][5][6][7]. The IPM of Thomas Grene kt in 1417 shows that he held in demesne as of fee Green's Norton and Boughton, Northants plus other properties in Northants. as well as considerable estates in eight other counties. It also referred to his widow Mary, who had married John Notyngham by 25 Jul 1418.

Monuments

The Greene monuments at St Bartholomew, Green’s Norton, Northamptonshire, now largely destroyed, were described by Halstead in 1685^[8]. There was a tomb for Sir Thomas Greene and Mary Talbot. The Inscription was in Latin , a translation of which is:

"Here lies Thomas Greene, Knight, son and heir of Thomas Greene, Knight, son and heir of Henry Greene, Knight, one of the Justices of King Edward Third, and Mary, his wife, the daughter of Lord Talbot, to whose souls may god be gracious. Amen."

On the side of this was a shield bearing Greene impaling Talbot – argent, a lion rampant gules, within a bordure engrailed of the last.

He was also noted on the monument to his grandson at St Bartholomew, Green’s Norton, as follows:

"Here lies Thomas Greene, Knight, Lord of Norton, and Matilda, his wife. The said Thomas was son and heir of Thomas Greene, Knight, Lord of the same, and of Philippa, his wife, who was the daughter of Robert, Lord Ferrars of Charteley, and of Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Lord Thomas de Spencer. Thomas Greene, the father of Thomas aforesaid, was son and heir of Thomas Greene, Knight, Lord of Norton aforesaid, and of Mary his wife, daughter of Richard, Lord Talbot, and of Ankarete, his wife, who was the daughter and heir of Lord Strange of Blackmere. Thomas, son of Thomas and Philippa aforesaid, died on the ninth of September, A.D. 1462; and the said Matilda, one of the daughters of John Throckmorton, Esq., formerly Under-Treasurer of England, died on the …. Of the month of … A.D. 14 … May God be gracious to their souls."

MARY TALBOT, married (1st) before 23 October 1398 THOMAS GREENE, Knt., son and heir of Thomas Greene, Knt., by Margery, daughter and heiress of John Mablethorpe, Knt. He was born about 1369-70. They had one son, Thomas, Knt. SIR THOMAS GREENE died 14 Dec. 1417, and was buried at Green's Norton, Northamptonshire. His widow, Mary, married (2nd) before 25 July 1418 JOHN NOTTINGHAM (or NOTYNGHANM), Esq., Mary died 13 April 1434, and was buried at Green's Norton, Northamptonshire.^[5][9]

Research Notes

• Various internet genealogies list him as son of Henry De Greene and Matilda De Mauduit. (I believe this is the other Thomas Greene Rorabacher-18). Some genealogies suggest he married Ela Mallory or his cousin, Ela de Greene.

• Henry Greene (abt.1403-) has been detached as a son, as no reliable evidence can be found to substantiate this relationship. Genealogist Douglas Richard (see extract above) states that Thomas Greene (abt.1369-1417) had only one son, Thomas Greene (abt.1400-1462). Donnelly-2171 03:08, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
