John de Bohun is in a trail badged by the Magna Carta Project to surety baron Richard de Clare (see text below).
John de Bohun, Knt., of Midhurst, etc., son and heir of James de Bohun (or Boun, Bowne) and Joan de Brewes, was born 14 November 1301 at Todham in Easebourne, Sussex.[1][2]
He proved his age, did homage and had livery of his lands in England and Ireland on 20 May 1323.[2] In July 1346 he was in the retinue of the Earl of Arundel and accompanied the King in his French campaign,[1] returning to England by 14 May 1347.[2]
John married first, before 1326, to Isabel, possibly the daughter of Sir Henry de Tregoz of Goring, Sussex.[1][2] They had two sons and three daughters:
He married second, before 6 November 1342, to Cicely Filoll (or Filiol, Filliol), daughter of Sir John Filoll and his second wife, Margery.[1][2] They had one son:
John was summoned to three councils by writs directed to Johanni de Bohun de Midhurst, from 10 October 1359[1] to 10 February 1361/2, "whereby he may be held to have become Lord Bohun, but none of his descendants were ever summoned to Parliament in respect of this Barony".[2]
John died on 5 December 1367[1] at age 66.[2] His heir was his son John, by his wife Cecily, who was "aged 5 and more" at his father's death.[3] His widow, Cecily, died 9 or 13 August 1381.[1][2]
