Biography

George DeVane, son of John (1730-1805) and Ann (Larkin) DeVane (1733-1819), was born about 1760 in either Bladen of New Hanover Counties, NC. He first purchased land in New Hanover County in 1785 on the east side of Black River from Pettigrew Moore, being 180 acres. He held this land until 1798 when it was sold to Timothy Hatcher. This is probably when he moved to Sampson County.[1]

George DeVane died March 19, 1810 in Sampson Co., NC.

His wife survived him and moved with some of the family to Alabama.

Will of George Devane, Sampson Co., North Carolina, 10 Feb 1810[2]

In The Name of God Amen. I George Devane of Sampson County being of Sound and perfect mind and Memory (Blessed be God) do this tenth day of February in the year of Our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Ten, Make and publish this my last Will and Testament, in Manner Following, that is to say,
First I Lend to my Beloved wife Miriam, All my plantation whereon I now live and the Lands adjoining the same during her natural life. Also I lend to her two Negroes, namely, Sam and Loveless during her widdowhood and in case she should marry the said Negroes to be Equally divided among my children hereafter named. Also I lend to her two other Negroes, namely Setira and primas During her natural life, and I also lend to her all my Stock of Cattle, hoggs, Sheep and horses (Except my horse called hawk) and all my Household Furniture and plantation Tools During her widdowhood, and if she should marry, then the above mentioned Stock and household furniture and Tools to be Equally Divided between her and my children hereafter named. Also all the Remaining part of my property personal or perishable not named to Remain in her possession for six years from the date of this my will undivided. Also I lend to her my griss mill and one half of my saw mill during her natural life.
I also give and bequeath to my well beloved son Cornelius Devane all the land and plantation on the East Side of Black River on Wild Cat Branch where my Father formerly lived. Also I give him one horse called hawk.
Also I give and bequeath to my well beloved sons John T. and Felix Devane the plantation and Lands adjoining whereon I now live to be Equally Divided between them after the Deceas of my wife Miriam.
Also it is my will that after the Expiration of six years from the date before mentioned that all my personal property which I have not particularly named and lent to my Beloved wife Miriam for the Term therein mentioned, to be Equally Divided among my children, namely, Elisabeth, Mary, Ann, Cornelius, Tabitha, John T., Felix, Catharine, Miriam and after the Deceas of my beloved wife, the personal and perishable property which I lend her during her natural life to be Equally Divided among my children before named.
And I hereby make and ordain My Wife Miriam and my worthy Friend Alexander Cromartye Executors of this my last will and Testament in witness whereof I the said George Devane have to this my last will and Testament set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

Notes

The 1790 Census of New Hanover County, NC show George Devane with 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16 and 4 females.

The 1800 Census shows George Devane in Sampson County, NC with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female 26-45.

and neither he nor his widow has been found on the 1810 Census. His oldest son Cornelius DeVane is shown in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses of Sampson County.
