Beatriz was an india woman from Tepeaca in the Valley of México born to unknown parents.[1] She was a servant of Cristóbal Brito and followed him to New Mexico with the Juan de Oñate Expedition in 1598.[1] She was later married to Juan de la Cruz and they had two known children, Pedro and Juana.[2] In 1628, she was accused by Pedro Marquez of murdering his brother Hernandez with witchcraft, apparently because Hernando spurned her daughter after living with her without marriage.[3] In 1635, Beatriz was having an affair with Diego Bellido, possibly while her husband Juan was still alive. She was later accused of murdering Diego with witchcraft.[4]
