William Hughes Dean was born on 27 Jun 1840 in Owen County, Indiana, USA. His parents were Samuel Dean (1799 - 1858) and Sarah (Hughes) Dean (1800 - 1880).
William was the sixth child of seven siblings, and lost his only brother, Isaac, in September, 1858, and his youngest sister, Amanda, at 14 in August, 1858. He also lost his uncle, Robert, in April 1858, and Williams father, Samuel, in March 1858. The cause of death of these three men is unknown. However, this writer believes cholera or influenza is the most likely cause of death.

William married Julia Beem Payne (1840 - 1917) on 12 Apr 1860 in Owen County. [1] , and they raised a family of six children to adulthood, and lost one daughter at age 2. He spent most of his life working as a farmer but the records show he did live in Greene Co., IN where two of his daughters were born, and then in Knox Co, IN in the 1880 census. He does not show up in the 1870 census, but it is my assumption he was living in Greene Co. at that time. His military pension records state he was being seen by a physician in Greene County between 1865 and 1872 when the physician died. Note: Some early researchers on William H. Dean stated that he married twice. This is not true. Owen county, Indiana marriage records show there were two William H. Dean's in the county in the correct time period. Note: Two photo's of Wm H. Dean have been located and copied.

William and family returned to Owen Co, in the 1890's where he lived in the Millgrove area at the extreme northern edge of the county and was an active member in the Methodist church there until he moved a few miles south and lived with his son James around 1896.
The records on the early life of William are sparse. However, one entry gives us a glimpse of his early married life. On April 1, 1864 Thomas Valentine Lyon, a brother of Williams brother-in-law James Allison Lyon, was travelling daily and working as a recruiter for the Union Army. In his journal he noted: Friday April 1, 1864, Locust Grove, Owen County, Indiana. "This morning we walked out to Jerrie (probably Jeremiah Devore, another brother-in-law) and stayed until after dinner then we went over to the log rolling at Billie Deans and went home with brother James from there".
In September 1864 in Jackson Township, Owen Co. William was drafted into Company B, 30th Volunteer Infantry. His military pension records show that he served in the battle in Nashville, TN and the pursuit of the confederate army into Alabama in December of that year. William H. Dean provides the following story of this ordeal: "...While in the above service and in line of duty, he contracted disease of the Lungs, also affliction of feet and limbs. The above affliction was caused by exposure in line of duty at different times and places, especially on march from Nashville through Tennessee and portion of Alabama in the month of December 1864 and January 1865. I was without shoes and made this long march barefoot. The weather was cold. Considerable snow and frost. During the march I became so much affected that my lung was so painful and my feet and legs was so cold, swollen and numb, that I was unable to march from the given affliction and was hauled in ambulance for two or three days. I have been greatly afflicted ever since. I am not able to work one half of the time. My lungs have troubled me a great deal, also my feet and legs especially in the winters..."
On July 1, 1920 a birthday celebration was held for William. The news article of the event states that William gave each of his children a $5 dollar gold piece at that celebration. On July 3, 1922 a Dean family celebration of William's 82nd birthday occurred. The local newspaper wrote a story about that event and listed the names of those present including an outline of William's uncle Roberts family tree.
William passed away at the home of his son, James, in Owen Co. on 10 Jan 1927 in Gosport, Wayne Township, Owen Co, Indiana aged 86.
"Newspaper" Owen Leader, Wed. Jan 26, 1927
