Wilhelm "William" Adolph Julius Degner was born on June 30, 1859, in Friedland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, to Wilhelmina Lehrman, age 29, and Carl Friedrich Degner, age 33. He immigrated to the United States, arriving on February 9, 1883, in New York City on the ship Elbe out of Bremen, Germany. [1] "The Elbe had accommodation for 179 First Class passengers, 142 in Second Class, and 796 in Steerage. She was a very popular ship with immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe to the United States and was virtually always sold out in steerage." [2]
He married Henrietta Dorothea Gebhardt before 1885 and they had two sons: Richard William Degner and Carl E Degner; and a daughter. In the Iowa State Census of 1885, he and Henrietta are living in Bloomington in Muscatine County, Iowa. [3] In 1900 they were farming in Seventysix, also in Muscatine County. They owned their farm and William was a naturalized citizen. [4]
In 1917, when he registered for the World War I draft, he was described as medium height and build with dark hair and blue eyes. [5]
In 1920, he and Dorothy were living with their son, Carl, in Emery, South Dakota. [6] They moved to Carrizozo, New Mexico, where his wife died in 1927. In 1930 he is living with his son Carl, a coal miner, and he listed his occupation as gardener. [7]
William died on February 7, 1937, in Carrizozo, New Mexico, and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery there. [8]
