James was born about 1847 in Mill Village, Queens County based on his age at marriage. He is the son of Charles Demone and Lucy Eichel. In the census of 1871 he was a servant in a Freeman home.[1] He married Susan Schwartz on December 10, 1872.[2] She was from Lunenburg and was also working as a servant in a nearby home.
After their marriage, they appear to have moved back to Lunenburg. They are in the town of Lunenburg in the 1881 census[3] with two children, Rogers (4) and Ethel (1) but the ages seem all wrong. Roger's birth year was taken from an adult baptism record so he may have been wrong on that but James and Susan should be about 10 years older.
They are in the town of Lunenburg in the 1891 census[4] and the ages are closer.
There were six known children born between 1884 and approximately 1887. At least four were known to be born in Lunenburg so it confirms the family had moved back there.
There is some uncertainty around James' death date. We have a record of a James Demone, Anglican, married, fisherman, from Lunenburg who died at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax on February 18, 1901 of Addison's Disease and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery.[5] His age at death is listed as 60 and James would have been about 54 but his age is a somewhat uncertain. It was all over the place in the census reports. Possibly no one knew for sure. It seems a good chance that this is our James however it is not completely proven that this is the same James.
