Biography

George William Victor Dermody was born in 1901 in Tipperary^[1]. He was the first child of William Dermody and Julia Rose Edith Evans. His father was a sea captain and frequently away. His parents were Scottish and English and both Church of Ireland.

In 1901, George's mother lived with him as a baby at the home of her father, George Evans, in Mertonhall, Tipperary^[2]. His grandfather was a wealthy timber merchant and large farmer. His house had eighteen rooms and five front windows. He had four stables, two coach houses, a harness room, two cow houses, a calf house, a dairy, a fowl house, a barn, a turf house, a workshop, four sheds and a store. Several of George's uncles and aunts lived there at the time.

George later got two younger siblings, Ronald and Dorothy. He later became known by his middle name, Victor. Their family home was in Ballyhasty, Tipperary and had eight rooms and eight front windows. There was a stable, coach house, dairy and turf house outside. They had one servant, Elizabeth Miller^[3].
