Biography

FRANCIS DEVANE was born in North Carolina in 1798, and came with his parents to Bulloch county, Georgia, and after reaching his maturity he married Miss Frances Giddens, a daughter of Thomas Giddens, R.S. She was born in North Carolina in 1797, and came with her parents to Georgia in childhood, and grew up partly in Bulloch and partly in Tattnall counties. She died at the family home in Berrien County, August 28, 1864. Her husband died there March 8, 1868. Both were buried in the Lois Cemetery, Berrien County. Francis DeVane and his family, with others of their family connection, moved to Lowndes county about 1831, and settled in the portion which was cut off into the new county of Berrien in 1856. He served in the Indian War in Capt. Levi J. Knight's independent company of militia in 1838. The Devane home in Berrien county was about ten miles south of Nashville; the son, William, after his parent's death, became the owner of the property and lived there. (Record is found in Bulloch county where he sold his home- place of 1000 acres to William Brannen, Nov. 6, 1830. This property was located on Lotts Creek (Deed Book 5, page 111).
