Research Notes

At some point after his move to Little Cove a change in the spelling of the family name occurred. All records from Maryland spell the name Devilbiss while in the Pennsylvania records, the name is spelled Divilbiss. It is unknown if the change wasintentional or unintentional.

The Records from Little Cove show: By 1802, Michael Divilbiss owned 150 acres of land and had a tannery and grist mill. The 1806 list of Communicants of the Stone Church included Michael Divilbiss and his wife. The property of Michael Divilbiss was sold in 1819 ( probably after his death to settle the estate).

All the descendants of Michael Devilbiss spell the family name as Divilbiss or Divelbiss, the latter being the most prevelant during the present time.

Probably due to the Dutch spelling (Teufelbiss) and the Dutch pronunication (Toy-Fel-Biss) this family reversed the "i" and "e" in spelling the name so they and their descendants spell it Divelbiss.
