Thomas Roderick Dew was born in 1802 in Dewsville, King and Queen County, Virginia. He was the son of Captain Thomas Roderick Dew and Lucy Gatewood.
He attended The College of William & Mary, graduating in 1820. He was a professor of history, metaphysics, and political economy at William & Mary from 1827 to 1836. He served as President of the College of William and Mary from 1836–1846.[1] Dew was an advocate for slavery. In his inaugural speech as President, he admonished young planters to resist fanatics who wished to eliminate slavery.
He died in 1846 of bronchitis.
In the 1810 census Thomas Dew was in King and Queen, Virginia, United States. He held 38 enslaved people.[2]
In the 1820 census Thomas Dew was in Drisdale, King and Queen, Virginia. He held 39 enslaved people.[3]
In the 1830 census Thomas Dew was in Caroline, Virginia. He held 20 enslaved people.[4]
