Biography

John Dew, Jr. was born 1675 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, to John Dew and his wife Elizabeth Sherrod, daughter of Capt Robert Sherrod/Sherrer. [1] Robert Shearer was also an uncle of John Dew, for he was his mother Elizabeth's brother. Therefore, John Dew & Susannah Shearer were related as 1st cousins.

John Dew's father perished when he was about three years of age, and it is supposed that John and his mother were supported by, and continued to live on a Plantation belonging to Col. Thomas Dewe, which in 1691 became the property of a grandson Thomas Dew age 21.

John was an heir in his father's will dated 31 Jan 1677, probated 17 Oct 1678. Isle of Wight, VA. [2]

John Dew, Jr. was 16 years old when his grandfather Col. Thomas Dewe, perished, and he married Susannah Shearer in about 1696 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. Before (3-28)

Mar. 1699, John Dew made a voyage to England, for he is found on the manifest of the "Adventure" that arrived from England during this time, at Virginia.

The Deposition of John Dew, aged Thirty-six years or thereabouts, on the holy Evangelist taken, faith, That on the 27th day of this Inst.[instante mense] January, a certain Meherrin Indian named John Querro, being at this Deponet's house on Meherrin River: This Deponent inquired of him what newes, and particuarly Wheather Tom Blount, the Tuskeruro Indian was gone, or would go to meet the Gover'r of Virginia.
To which the Indian replied, he was not, neighter would he go; saying withall, perhaps the people of Virginia were not good and would scold -- withall adding, That Tom Blount would not send or carry his Boyes: which this Deponent understood were to have carried as hostages: And he further added: That perhaps Tom Blount would scold too, when the leaves were put out--
Then this Depon't turning his discourse to one John Lewis who was present, whilst this Discourse lasted, Bid him take notice of it for he would inform the Presid't therof--
The Indian immediately changed his countenance, and said de did not hear Tom Blount himself say so, but one of the young men.
And this Depend't further saith: Thath having had some Discourse with ye said John Lewis, the day before, concerning a Report of the Sinnagars joyning the Tuskeruros, the Deponent inquired of the said John Querro concerning ye same: Who thold this Depon't that the time of ye leaves comeing, or between that time and hott weather, the Sinnagars were Expected, perhaps a thousand or more--. John Dew, Capt et Jurat [swears] 20 day January 1712 Coram me [In front of me] -- Thomas Pollock"
Note: Meherrin River is a tributary to the Chowan River that joins in Hertford County, North Carolina.

As son-in-law, of Robert Shearer, John Dew was overseer in 1727, Bertie Co. (this proving that John Dew's wife Susannah Shearer, who was named in the Will, was a daughter of Robert. )

He owned large tracts of land on Meherrin River. [3] [1]
