Biography

Harriet was born in 1852. She was the daughter of Frederick Dew and Mary (Cunningham) Dew. [1]

Harriet had a liaison with John James Robertson (1851-1926) in 1872. Her eldest son John James (Dew) Barlow (1873-1958) was the result.

Four years later Harriet married Henry Barlow in Murrurundi in 1876. [2]

Harriet died, aged 91, on the 14 October 1944, She died at her daughter's home, 40 Castlereagh Street, Penrith. [3] A death notice was placed in the Nepean Times -

BARLOW.—October 14, 1944, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. H, J. Baker, 40 Castlereagh Street, Penrith, Harriett Eliza, relict of the late Henry Barlow, aged 91 years. Interred Penrith General Cemetery, 16th inst. [4]

She was buried in the Penrith General Cemetery on the 16 October 1914. Her grave is in the Methodist Monumental Section, Row A, Plot 18. [5] [6]

Death of Mrs. H. E. Barlow
Mrs Harriett Eliza Barlow, a very esteemed lady of this town, died on Saturday at the residence of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs H. J. Baker, Castlereagh Street South, Penrith, in her 92nd year.
Mrs Barlow was born at Dawes Point, Sydney, her maiden name being Dew. Her father was a boat builder. In her girlhood she went to Murrurundi, where she was married to Henry Barlow.
Mr and Mrs Barlow came to Sydney and were in business in Barlow Street for some time. About 70 years ago they came to Penrith, where they resided for the rest of their days. Mr Barlow passed away 26 years ago.
Surviving sons and daughters are: Jack (Bondi), formerly employed as a telegraph operator at Emu Plains railway station; William Henry (Sandringham), who was employed for a number of years by W. and E. Fulton, Penrith; Gertie (Mrs J. Sinclair). Dulwich Hill; Edith (Mrs T. Cody), Chatswood; Sidney (Newtown); and Essie (Mrs H. J. Baker), Penrith. Two daughters and one son (Thelma, Muriel and George) predeceased Mrs Barlow. There are 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Sisters of deceased are Miss Ethel Dew (Sans Souci), Mrs J. C. Ross (Sans Souci), and Mrs Phyllis Sullivan (Sans Souci).
Mrs Barlow had enjoyed good health up to about ten weeks ago, when she developed bronchitis.
The funeral took place on Monday. A service was conducted at the house, Castlereagh Street, by Rev. A. J. Cutler, who also performed the last solemn offices at the graveside in the Methodist portion of Penrith general cemetery.[7]

Notes

Checking other trees, some seem to have lost John James the 1st born son of Harriet. The death notice though is clear that all at that time thought John James - at least publicly - was the son of Henry. In the death notice the length of the marriage takes in John James.
