Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a white commissioned officer - Second Lieutenant - in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 20 years old, married and working as a printer when he enlisted on 2 March 1863 from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He mustered in 12 March 1863. Resigned 5 January 1864. He re-enlisted as Second Lieutenant in the 61st Massachusetts on 3 April 1865. Discharged 4 June 1865 at the end of his term of service.[1]

Prior to his service with the 54th, he served in Company C of the 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in 1861, and as a Corporal in the 11th Massachusetts in 1862.[2]
