In 1911 John was living as a farm servant in Gortnagross, County Londonderry.[3]
John emigrated to Toronto, Ontario (via New York City) in 1913[4][5] before moving to Walnut, Illinois (via Port Huron, Michigan) in 1914.[6] He also lived in Drumheller, Alberta before settling finally in the United States in 1922.[7][8]
