Biography

Betsy Dickerman was born approximately 1816, as estimated by her age on the 1840 & -50 censuses. [1] [2] [3] [4] We have not verified her parents, but she was identified as Elizabeth Dickerman in her son, Garrett's death certificate , and more info can be found in the research notes as to why she has been connected to Nathaniel Dickerman as his daughter with uncertain status. [5] and as "Betsy" in other chidren's marriage records. [citation needed]

She married Peter G Vanderhoof and they resided in Pequyannock, Morrsi County, New Jersey. [6] [7]

They had children:

  • Garret P. ( 25 July 1835-1906) [8]
  • William (1837-1909)
  • Margaret J. (1839-1908)
  • Pheby (1841-)
  • Jane (29 Aug 1842-) [8]
  • George (1843-1921)
  • Mary E. (1845? -died 30 Mar 1863 [8]
  • Elizabeth (1845-)
  • Charles (1847-)
  • Harriet (1850-)

(Note there are family papers that include handwritten family records found in a trunk in a flea market that list some births and deaths without listing parents. Some have been included above based on their appearance in order and following a known child. Transcriptions will follow) [citation needed]

I have not found information yet on Betsy's death, but it is likely between 1850-1852 as her last child was born in 1850 and Peter married Hester Morgan in November of 1852.

Research Notes

Search for Elizabeth's Parents

In the 1830 census, there are two Dickerman families located in Pequannock; those of Nathaniel Dickerman and Moses Dickerman.

  • Nathaniel DIckerman lives next door to RIchard Vanderhoof (and not far from John Vanderhoof and James Losaw - some have said his wife is Betsy Losaw) so there is proximity between the this Dickerman and Vanderhoof families. He is aged 40-49, as is his presumed wife. they have five children (3 boys and 2 girls between 0-14; I believe Elizabeth would be about 14 years old at that time. Nathaniel seems like a potential father for Elizabeth. More research is needed.
    • It is not clear whether the Nathaniel Dickerman who lived in Pequannoick with his family in 1830 is the same Nathaniel Dickerman later in NY here: Nathaniel Dickerman (1797-1845) This Nathaniel might be be younger and it is certainly not the same wife. It is possible Betsy died in 1830-1831 (as some have listed without a source) and he moved back to NY and married a second time. More research is needed as there is actually no evidecne for this, it is just a hypothesis.
    • Unsourced trees have identified a Nathaniel Dickerman b 1790 d 1860, who married Elizabeth Betsy Losaw, had two children - Joshua and Jesse N and died in Passaic, NJ in 1860. Sources for this information are not provided. Joshua and Jessie are the right ages to be the two boys living with Nathaniel in Pequannock at the 1830 census but the other children are not accounted for.
    • I believe that Elizabeth is the sister of Jesse N Dickerman (abt.1824-1902) and Joshua H. Dickerman (1827-1895) . SHe might be the eldest daughter of this family but I have no proof. There is some weak evidence suggesting this, however nothing that rises to genealogical poroof standards. :
      • It is supported by DNA matches between descendants of Elizabeth and Jesse and Joshua which suggest that they were siblings.
      • The proximity of the Nathaniel Dickerman family to both the Peter Vanderhoof family and the Peter Losaw family in Pequannock, NJ in 1830.
      • Jesse N reported that he had been born in NJ and his parents listed as Nathaniel & Betsey on his death record.
      • Joshua DIckerman reports his parents were born in Vermont.

Child born in 1861 in Rockaway? Conflation?

  • Birth record for daughter, Clara born 25 Dec 1861 at Rockaway, NJ. Lists father Peter, mother Betsy M. [9] This is probably too late for this to be our Peter G and Betsy. The same name of wife is interesteing, is a conflation risk , and requires research. A Betsy Hiler married another Peter Vanderhoof, so this is likely them.

Additional research: Headstone photo found from Boonton (Rockaway Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery) on Ancestry from MHestler56 that lists: Peter Vanderhoof 1844-1913 Betsey M. His wife 1846-1902 Clara died July 31, 1862 aged 7 mos Asa their soin 1864-1902

MHestler reports this is Betsy M Hiler, married to Peter VH, son of Cornelius VH )
