Biography

David Dickson was born about 1809, possibly 13 Nov 1808 in Scotland.[1]

He married Jane Strachan in Sydney on 8 Feb 1839.

The Colonist, Saturday 9 Feb 1839 - "MARRIED, On Friday week, in the Scots Church, Sydney, by the Rev. William McIntyre, A. M., Mr. David Dickson, Bathurst, to Miss Jane, second daughter of Mr. Strachan, Gelston Lodge, near Castle Douglas, Galloway, Scotland."

He passed away in 1867 at his residence, Bolwarra House, West Maitland, in the Colony of New South Wales, in the 59th year of his age, from injuries sustained in an accident where he was compressed between a dray wheel and wall.[2]

"DEATH OF Mr. DAVID DICKSON.

The fearful injury, from sudden compression between a dray wheel and a wall, sustained by Mr. David Dickson on Saturday morning last, terminated in his death on Wednesday night. Mr. Dickson bore his severe sufferings with the composure of a christian, and indeed during the last day he suffered but little, mortification having set in. He has left a widow and eight children to mourn his sudden death. Some of his sons and daughters being grown up.

Mr. Dickson was an old inhabitant of Maitland-some twenty-five years, we think-and for many years was a partner in the large wholesale and retail house of M'ssrs D & J. Dickson. This commercial position he gave up to become the sole proprietor of the Bolwarra Estate, previously the property of the firm. This property he managed with great success, letting out the greater portion in farms of moderate size, and farming a small portion himself. The estate being close to Maitland, having navigable river frontages within reach of the droghing steamers, and embracing a great quantity of very rich cultivation land, is one of the most valuable to farmers of any in this district. Mr Dickson had greatly improved and added to the mansion on the estate, and had founded or aided schools, &c at suitable places. Latterly, since the more frequent occurrence of floods, he had effected considerable improvements on the estate by embanking the lower portions of it, in conjunction with his tenants-Mr. Dickson finding the money, and the tenants supplying labour of men and teams at a lower rate than usual.

Throughout his Maitland life Mr. Dickson abstained from mixing in public matters, but in business and in private life he was well known by his strict integrity of character. He was a munificent contributor to religious and scholastic efforts in connection with his own denomination, the Free Presbyterian Church, and the Free Church and the High School building were largely in-debted to his generosity. Mr. Dickson took for years a leading part in tie internal management of the denomi-nation to which he belonged.

The funeral will take place on Monday, at two o'clock in the afternoon, having been postponed to allow of relatives attending from a distance."
