Biography

William's birth and death dates, 6 September 1794 and 7 May 1869 respectively, are incised on his tombstone in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, in Westminster, Oconee County, South Carolina, United States of America, according to the Find A Grave Index record that does not have a biography. It has his birth and death locations as South Carolina, United States of America[1], with his father William Dickson (1762-1829), mother Hannah Sitton Dickson (1767-1812) and spouse Elizabeth Ann Abbott Dickson (1791-1874).

There does not appear to be a marriage record but it may have taken place in about 1817 based on the birth of their first child John Simpson Dickson on 24 April 1818 in South Carolina.

The 1830 United States Federal Census for William Dickson of Pickens, South Carolina does seem to fit the age distribution of the family members outlined in a very well resourced Ancestry FT[2].

There is a 'U.S., Selected Federal Census Non-Population Schedules in the 1850-1880' time range, which was enumerated in October 1850 and has the land acreage and livestock and other agricultural statistics for Simpson Dickson, and 2 William Dicksons, in the Western Division 453 of Pickens, in South Carolina. These were possibly this William and the elder of his 2 sons with that forename, William Thompson Dickson[3]. No 1850 United States Federal Census has yet been found for this family.

Shortly prior to the next Census, William Dickson Jr. advertised some land for sale on 19 July 1860, in Pickens District, 6 miles east of Walhalla, in the Keowee Courier. It is considered most likely to have been this William Dickson.

The 1860 United States Federal Census that was enumerated on the 24th July 1860 at Bachelors Retreat, 2nd Regiment in the District of Pickens, South Carolina, has Wm Dickson (67) a Farmer born in South Carolina, with Real Estate valued at $2,000 and Personal Estate at $1,035. His wife Elizabeth A Dickson (70) was born in Georgia, while their daughter Mary J (20) [transcribed as 30] was born in South Carolina. The next family on the Census is for Lewis Dickson (24) a Farmer, wife Harriett (20) and 7 mths old daughter Julia E, all born in South Carolina[4][5]. Lewis Dickson was the last of the 8 children of William and Elizabeth, according to a well resourced Ancestry FT whose sources also show that 2 of their children married into the notable Cleveland family (see ref.2).

William had his Last Will and Testament written in 1853 but naturally Probate was not granted until after his death in 1869. The original had been transcribed by the author of the family tree referred to in the previous paragraph[6]. Essentially each of his children would receive $100, while his wife Elizabeth Ann Dickson would "remain in full possession of my homestead with all the rights and privileges of comfort and as good a support as my two younger sons can make for her after which they may have all they make upon the farm as long as she may live a widow" (see ref.2).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
