John was born on 16 October 1875 in St. Mary, Waseca, Minnesota. He was the son of John W Diederich and Catherine (Bisenius) Diederich.^[1][2][3]

When John was 36 he married Elizabeth Gertrude Kahnke on 21 November 1911 in Waseca, Minnesota.^[4][5]
