Biography

Mary (Dietz) Gable has German Roots.
Mary (Dietz) Gable was a Pennsylvanian.

Mary, daughter of John Christopher Dietz and Leah Alverta Shaffer, was born 31 March 1904 in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1]

By 1910, her parents John C. (age 36, mill owner) and Leah A. Dietz (32, mother of four, all living) owned their farm on Harding Road in York Township, where they resided with their children Mary May (6), Charles Franklin (12), Florence Rachel (10), and Paul Edward (3), as well as the hirelings Eli Ferree (23) and Lottie Shaffer (21).[2]

Her family moved to the city of York before 1918.[3] By 1920, Mary M. (age 16) labored at the chain works, while living with her parents John C. (age 46, chauffeur(?) for Atlantic Refining Company) and Leah A. (42) in the home they owned at 839 South Queen Street, York.[4] Her siblings Florence R. (19, laborer, chain works), Paul E. (13) and Lucretia Alverta (3) also resided there.[4]

John C. (age 56, box factory worker), Leah A. (53), Mary M. (26, hosiery mill forelady), Paul E. (24, hosiery mill weaver), Lucretia A. (13) remained in the same house in 1930.[5]

About 1932-33, Mary married Paul M. Gable. son of Isaac Tyson Gable and Agnes McDowell.[citation needed] They had at least one son:

  • John Philip Gable (b. 26 June 1933;[6] married;[6] d. 18 January 2019).[6]

By 1935, the couple settled in Millcreek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania.[7] Paul (age 38, public school teacher) and Mary Gable (36) rented a home there on West Ridge Road, where they lived with their son John P. (6) in 1940.[7]

Mary died 2 October 1980 in York,[1] and was buried at Salem Union Cemetery in Jacobus, York County.[8]
