Gift Diplock was born about July 1844 in Falmer, Sussex, England, United Kingdom, daughter of John Diplock (1815–1879) and Ann Blackmore (1817–1881).[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] She was baptized on 20 October 1844 in Falmer.

Ann married Ralph Ellis (born in June 1836 in Longborough, Gloucestershire, England). Their known children were:

In 1851, Ann (6) was living in Sussex with her father, John (56); her daughter, Ann (35); and her siblings, James Blaskmore (11), and George (7). [7]

In 1861, Ann (16) was living in Sussex with her father, John (46); her daughter, Anne (46); her brother, George (18); and Peter Potter (30). [8]

In 1891, Ann (46) was living in Deptford, St Paul Deptford, London, England with her wife, Mary (18); their children, Ralph (20), Minnie (6), and Hannah (4); and William Hilton (20, lodger), Mary Ellis (6, /12 daughter), and Soloman Biffinton (47, lodger). [9]

In 1901, Ann (56) was living in London with Estimated Birth Year (abt 1848), Relation to Head (Head), Gender (Female), Birth Place (Falmer, Essex, England), Civil Parish (St Paul), Ecclesiastical parish (St Paul), County/Island (London), Registration District (Greenwich), Sub-registration District (Deptford Central), ED, institution, or vessel (04), Piece (527), Folio (120), Page Number (37), Household Schedule Number (252), and Household Members (Ann Elles 53

In 1911, Ann (66)'s occupation was 'domestic work'. She was living at 22 Comet Street, Deptford with her children, Minnie Greenway (29), Minnie Greenway (8), and Annie Greenway (6); and Arthur Greenway (39), Albert Greenway (3), and Edward George Greenway (0). [11]

Ann died in October 1933 in Greenwich, Kent, England, aged 84.[6] [12] [13]

Research Notes

  • we believe that Gift changes her name a lot over her life as following the records through she switches between Gift and Ann, Diplock and Ellis.
  • We have not found a Marriage certificate.
  • We know that Ralph was a part of the Travelling Community and moved a lot.
  • The Workhouse admission source is on the same date that Minnie was born. as well as Minnie being born Diplock and not Ellis, Later taking on Ellis.
  • We don't know if Ralph is Gifts son as the only Birth record i could find was mothers maiden name Bennett. there is a DNA link to Ralph, Mary and Minnie.
  • We are unsure that Caroline, Ann and Thomas are Gift's Children, though they where born in the same area, mothers maiden name was Diplock and the names used are used in Gifts and Ralphs family (Crossley, Matilda).
  • the last few years of her life she lived with her daughter Minnie and her family before living alone. she is listed as Ann Ellis during this time and Gift Ellis at her death.
