Joseph is the child of Elisha Doane and Hannah Cole. He was born in Eastham, which later became Wellfleet, and settled in Chatham, where his father had an estate.
Joseph Commanded a regiment in the Revolutionary War and was a Colonel in the militia.

He engaged in whale fishing and later owned a tavern. He was a prominent man in town--a selectman, a justice of the peace and a representative to the general court.
He married Dorcas Eldredge on April 12, 1739,

who had a twin named Mary. Dorcas was the daughter of Elisha Eldridge and Dorcas Mulford.
