Biography

This profile is part of the Doby Name Study.

Mary was born on January 20, 1906 in Aiken County, South Carolina, United States. She was the daughter of William Dobey and his second wife, Elizabeth Friday Dobey. Mary had one brother, William Henry Dobey, Jr., who was two years old when she was born.[1]

Her father had been the police chief of Aiken, Aiken County, South Carolina. He died on May 6,1906 when Mary was only about three months old. "Lizzie" sold the property in Aiken and returned to her home in Graniteville, Aiken County, South Carolina.[2][3]

Mary's brother, William Henry Dobey, Jr., died at the age of four on August 28, 1908. He reportedly died of diphtheria.[4]

In the 1910 U. S. Census (May 28, 1910) Lizzie, age 28, and her four-year-old daughter, Mary, were living in Graniteville. Lizzie was working as a clerk in a grocery store. They were living in a home with the family of Lizzie's brother, Thomas Everett Friday [5]

Elizabeth (Friday) Dobey married William Wilson Woodward in about 1914. [6]

In the 1920 U. S. Census (January 9, 1920) the family lived in a rented home in the unincorporated village of Graniteville. Graniteville was the mill village for employees of Graniteville Mill. Lizzie was thirty-seven and working as a weaver in the mill. William was seventy and not working. Mary was thirteen. Her surname is not noted as "Dobey" in the record. William and Lizzie had a son son, Lawrence, who was incorrectly identified as "Laura" and female in this record. He was five years old.[7]

Mary completed seventh grade before leaving school.[8]

Marriage

Mary Dobey was shown as eighteen on the application for a marriage license that was issued on in Edgefield County, South Carolina on December 22, 1922 to Mary, of Graniteville, and Samuel (Sammie) O. Carpenter, of Trenton (Edgefield County) South Carolina. She was actually sixteen. They were married the next day, December 23, 1922, in Langley, Edgefield County, South Carolina, United States.[9][10]

Mary and Samuel lived at the home of her mother for a short time. Their first child, Elizabeth, was born at Lizzie Woodward's home on October 13, 1923. About two weeks after the birth of Elizabeth, they relocated to North Augusta, Aiken County, South Carolina.[11]

William Woodward died at the home he shared with Lizzie and Lawrence in Graniteville (Gregg Township), Aiken County, South Carolina, United States on October 31, 1924. He was seventy-two years old and had suffered for Bright's (kidney) disease. His obituary indicated he had two children: Mrs. Mary Carpenter of North Augusta and Lawrence Woodward. It does not indicate that Mary was his stepdaughter, so they may have had a close relationship after he joined the family.[12]

A son, Samuel Marion Carpenter, was born on April 27, 1925. He was named after his paternal grandfather, but as a child was called Robert. He was also born in Graniteville, likely at his maternal grandmother's home.[13]

In the 1930 U. S. Census (April 16, 1930) Samuel (Sam O.) and Mary Carpenter lived in North Augusta (Schultz Township), Aiken County, South Carolina, United States. Samuel was twenty-nine and worked as a mechanic in an auto supply shop. Mary was twenty-four and indicated she was seventeen when she married. They had two children: Elizabeth Carpenter, age six and attending school, and Robert Carpenter age five.[14]

In the 1935 Augusta City Directory, which included North Augusta, Aiken County, South Carolina, the family lived at 157 Jackson Avenue in North Augusta. Samuel was operating an auto repair shop at 4 East Buena Vista Avenue, North Augusta.[15]

On December 21,1935 Mary's brother, Lawrence Edward Woodward, and Dempsey Mixon were married at the Methodist Church in North Augusta, Aiken County, South Carolina. The announcement in the newspaper indicated that the couple planned to live with "the mother of the bridegroom", Elizabeth Woodward.[16]

Samuel died on January 1,1940 at University Hospital in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, United States of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on New Year's Eve in 1939. The family lived at 462 West Avenue in North Augusta, South Carolina. His obituary indicated he operated Carpenter's Garage in North Augusta and had lived there for twelve years.[17]

In the 1940 U. S. Census (April 11, 1940) Mary's family lived in a rented home at 462 West Avenue, in North Augusta. Mary was thirty-four-years-old. She had not worked and had no income for 1939. After the death of her husband she had taken a job at a cloth printing mill as a cloth folder. She had worked thirty-nine hours the week prior to the census. She had no other income.[8]

Mary's household in 1940 included her two children: Elizabeth, age sixteen, and Robert, age fourteen. Both children were attending school. Also living in the home were two of Samuel's brothers: Frank W. Carpenter, age 26, and Henry W. Carpenter, age 20. They were both employed at the cotton printing mill.[8]

With the beginning of World War II, Lawrence served in the military. In 1942 Mary's mother, Lizzie, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Lizzie and Dempsey moved to the home of Mary Carpenter in North Augusta, Aiken County, South Carolina, United States. Lizzie became increasingly ill at the beginning of 1943. Lizzie died at the age of sixty-one on June 20,1943 at Mary's home.[18]

In 1945 Mary was living at 614 West Avenue in North Augusta. She was working as a saleswoman at "Silver". It is unknown what type of business this is. Her sister-in-law, Dempsey Woodward, was living in the household and working at the Goodyear Service Store.[19][20]

In the 1946 Augusta City Directory Mary's brother had returned from military service and he and his wife, Dempsey, were living elsewhere in North Augusta. In 1945 Mary's daughter, Elizabeth, had married John L. Hixon and in the 1946 Mary had lived in the household at 614 West Avenue in North Augusta. John L and Elizabeth were renting or rooming at 615 West Avenue in North Augusta.[21][22]

In the 1950 U. S. Census (April 6, 1950) Mary lived at 215 Forrest Avenue, in North Augusta in the same household as her daughter and son-in-law. Mary was forty-four-years-old and was working as a drug clerk at a department store. Both John and Elizabeth were working and they had a five-year-old son, Douglas R. Hickson.[23]

In the 1952 Augusta City Directory Mary still lived at 215 West Forrest Avenue. She was a salesman at H. L. Greene Company in North Augusta, South Carolina. H. L. Greene was a five and dime department store that had previously been operated under the name Silver where Mary worked before. It may have had a drug department where she worked in 1950. It was located at 870 Broad Street in North Augusta, South Carolina.[24]

Death and Burial

Mary had retired from the H. L. Greene Company. At the time of her death at age 87, she was living at 750 Murrah Road, in North Augusta. She had lived in North Augusta for sixty-eight years.[25]

She died at University Hospital in Augusta, Richmond County, South Carolina on Friday, July 23, 1993. Survivors included her daughter, Elizabeth, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.[25]

Her funeral was held at First Baptist Church in North Augusta, with Dr. Gary C. Redding officiating at 3 p.m. on July 25, 1993. She was buried in Pineview Memorial Gardens cemetery in North Augusta, Aiken County, South Carolina.[25][1]
