Biography

Joseph Dodge Sr. was born on June 4, 1651 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony and was a farmer. He was a son of Richard Dodge and Edith Brayne, Joseph was christened at 9 years old in 1660 in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony and was raised in Beverly Essex, Massachusetts. He married there to Sarah Eaton on 28 February 1671[1]. They had 10 children:

  1. Abigail
  2. Joseph
  3. Noah
  4. Prudence
  5. Abigail
  6. Jonah
  7. Sarah
  8. Elisha
  9. Charity
  10. Nathaniel

He passed away on 10 Aug 1716 in Beverly, Essex, Province of Massachusetts Bay[2]

He was a farmer of his acreage near his father in the Beverly area. The Dodge land became known as Dodge Row and a portion of it remains today as the Dodge Row Cemetery, in Beverly, Massachusetts.

He was one of the executors of his father's estate, receiving a liberal share jointly with his brother Edward. They held the same under a verbal agreement until February, 1708/9, when they put their division in writing.

Joseph's sons, Jonah and Elisha, were the executors of his estate.

Research Note

A small on-line Vital Records disagreement on marriage date and place for Joseph and Sarah. Two Vital Record sources say they were married on 21 Feb 1671 in Beverly and another source lists them married in Reading on 28 Feb 1671. The Genealogy of the Dodge Family used 21 Feb 1671/2 but omits location. Joseph lived in Beverly / Sarah lived in Reading ? The difference dates and location is a minor item, but worth a small note.
