Robert Hamilton Dodson was "coxswain" of the ill-fated crew of the steam launch of the U. S. warship "Minnesota," which went down with all on board between 12 and 1o'clock on the early morning of June nth, 1907, in Hampton Roads, Va., while returning from the Jamestown exposition.
The following extract from the letter of Captain John Hubbard, commanding the Minnesota, to his father,
"I consider that the Navy has sustained a great loss when your son was drowned, as he has been most zealous and efficient in the performance of his duties, and reflected great credit upon his ship and the naval service in general. He lost his life while in the performance of his duty."
His body was recovered and sent to his Chicago home. He was buried June 22nd, in "Oakwoods Cemetery" with naval honors. Six cadets from the naval reserve ship "Dorothea," in full uniform, were the pall bearers.
