Biography

The master version of this biography is maintained at http://www.dorneyfamilyhistory.net/famtree_web/History_dorney.pdf

Mary was born in Clonmel, County Tipperary and was baptised at St. Peter and St. Paul’s in Clonmel on 27 April 1846.[1] The baptismal sponsors were Richard Savage and Ellen Lahy. Mary is the daughter of Thomas Dorney and Catherine Russell.

Mary married Edward Butler in Dungarvan, County Waterford in 1870.

Cork Examiner 2 May 1870, Page 4
BUTLER-DORNEY - At Dungarvan, Mr Edmond Butler, Post-office, Cork, to Mary Anne, second daughter of Mr. Thomas Dorney, Clonmel.

After their marriage the Butler's moved to Cork where Edward worked for the Post Office.

They initially lived in the Ballintemple area, where their daughter Mary was born. From 1872 to about 1878 Mary and her family lived at 2 Rockwell Terrace in the Blackpool area, and then from 1879 to at least 1890 on Mahony's Avenue in the Saint Luke area of Cork.

At the time of the 1901 Census, Mary was living with her family in the sub Post Office on Old Youghal Road in Cork. Her family consisted of her mother, her husband Edward and four daughters, Margaret (25), Nora (16), Agnes (15) and Gertrude (11).[2] Mary's profession was given as Town Sub-Postmistress.

Mary was still living in the same location in 1911, with now just her husband and two daughters, Margaret and Agnes, in the household.[3]

The 1911 Census recorded that Mary had given birth to ten living children, seven of whom were still living. Only nine of these children have so far been identified.

Mary died at the Barrackton Post Office (in the Old Youghal Road area) on 2 March 1919. Her daughter Nora Butler was present at the death, her residence was also given as the Barrackton Post Office.[4]
