George's parents were Scottish, married in 1846 at Glasgow. They promptly moved to Newfoundland, an odd choice. Two children were born in Newfoundland, then the family moved to rejoin relatives at Troy, New York, where a third child was born in 1849. Then they moved to Chicago before 1860, listed in the 1860 U.S. census and 1865 state census. But George was not with them in the 1860 census; he seems to have died before that date. No clear evidence of his death has been found.
