Biography

Patrick Doyle was born in Ireland.

Patrick was a Roman Catholic.

Patrick Doyle was born in Ireland, either in Naas, County Kildare,^[1] or in Dublin.^[2]

His age was given as 29 in 1850.^[3] He was born in "eighteen hundred and twenty" but only "about 26 years of age" according to his ambiguous petition for naturalization, dated the "Second Tuesday of May in the year eighteen hundred and fifty six".^[2] He was 40 in 1860,^[4] 55 on 23 June 1870^[5] and either "Aged 56 years 2m and 4 days"^[1] or 59 years 2 months and 1 day^[6] when he died on 18 May 1877. This gives a range of implied birth years from late 1814 to 1830.

By the time Patrick petitioned for naturalization, he was using "the Seventeenth day of March" as his birthday. This was a popular estimated birthday for Irish people who neither remembered nor knew nor cared exactly when they had been born, particularly for Irish men named Patrick, since it is St Patrick's feast day and one of the few dates celebrated annually.

His death record^[6] names his parents as Edward and Martha, both born in Ireland, but without a maiden name for the mother. These names have not been verified in any primary source.

Patrick Doyle married Martha Lenahan on the 19th April 1849 in Naas, County Kildare; in the presence Patrick Ennis and Margaret Ennis.^[7][8] They sailed for New York soon after their wedding, arriving there on the 7th June 1849.^[2]

Patrick and Martha had at least six children:

In the 1850 census Patrick Doyle (aged 29), laborer, was in Stockbridge, Berkshire, Massachusetts.^[3]

Patrick Doyle petitioned naturalization in May 1856 in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts.^[2]

In the 1860 census Patrick Doyle (aged 40), RR overseer, was in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts.^[4]

In the 1870 census Patrick Doyle (aged 55), RR baggage master, was in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts.^[5]

Patrick Doyle died (aged 59) on the 18th May 1877 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts^[6] and was buried in Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts.^[1]

Patrick Doyle's estate passed probate on the 5th June 1877 in Berkshire, Massachusetts.^[9]

I've exhausted all resources finding Patrick's immediate family in Ireland-if you are reading this, maybe you can help?

Patrick's headstone reads he was from the Parish of Naas. His naturalization paperwork says he was born in Dublin.

His death record from Massachusetts states his parents were Edward and Martha Doyle which is not correct unless he was born in Dublin (see notes below).

I went through the baptism register for Naas starting in 1813 ISO of a Patrick Doyle that might be his father. Of note: There is a Patrick Doyle/Eliza Bulger that are having children as early as 1813. Did not have a son Patrick. There is a Patrick Doyle/Jane Caffery (sp) having children starting in 1820 but no Patrick born to them. There is a Patrick Doyle/Mary Walsh having children as of 1826. Had a son Patrick in 1833 (too late).

Looking for Patrick Doyle born to ANY male Doyle in Naas register: Aug 1,1814: Patrick to a John Doyle/Rose Mullally (too early)-no

• Oct 3, 1826 There is a Patrick Doyle born to Michael Doyle/Ellen Brogan. Not a March birthdate as recorded on his records. Not the correct year as his records. My Patrick named his first son Michael.-maybe?

April 16, 1833 Patrick to a Patrick Doyle/Mary Walsh (too late)-no NOTE: There are no Patricks born to any Edward Doyle in the Naas parish register.

There are Patrick Doyle families that remain active in Naas after this Patrick Doyle has left for the U.S. He (or a Mrs Pat Doyle) is witness to several marriages starting in the 1830s, one having children as early as 1813, and one Patrick gets married in 1841, one married in 1852 (or are they the same widowed person). These are obviously not this Patrick's parents or siblings (see above).

If he was really born in Dublin, I don't have any way to narrow this down. Any help would be appreciated.
