Charles was the son of the writer John Dryden and Elizabeth Howard. He was born at his maternal grandfather's residence at Charlton, Wiltshire on 27 August 1666: his parents had taken refuge there from the Great Plague.[1]
He was educated at Westminster School, London and at Trinity College, Cambridge,[1] where he matriculated in 1680[2]
He was a minor poet. In the 1690s he was in Rome as a chamberlain of the Pope. He was back in England by 1698.[1][2]
In August 1704 Charles drowned in the River Thames at Datchet, Buckinghamshire. He was buried at Windsor, Berkshire on 20 August.[1][2]
