[From: Benjamin Duckworth: His Descendants and Related Families, compiled by Sandra Boyd from research by Lucille Skehan]:
He was killed June 5, 1863 during the Battle of Vicksburg.......as can be proved by his Civil War Record, which can be found in the Mississippi Archives......it is true in that a stray bullet from the Union lines killed him, during the celebration that the battle in that area was over.
The following information has been passed down from that generation of Wade relatives, to the present time: During the Battle of Vicksburg, smoke from the guns there was thick enough to be seen in the Big Creek Community of Jones County, in the area of Highway 84 West of Laurel 14 miles. The wives of the fighting men stood in their yards and listened to the booming cannon from the battle..... Norvel Robert Duckworth was the only one of the eight brothers and three brothers-in-law who was killed in battle in the war. Not all were in that particular battle.
[Compilers Note: The 'as the crow flies' distance between the Battle of Vicksburg and the Big Creek Community described above is nearly 100 miles. Forest fires can disperse smoke for many hundreds of miles and I have heard artillery fire from about that distance when living east of the Marine base at Camp Pendleton, California, so the story is totally plausible in my opinion]
