Biography

Sarah Ann Duffield was born in Wootton, Oxfordshire, England on June 16, 1871.

During the 1881 England and Wales Census, Sarah was a nine year old scholar living in Wootton, Oxfordshire, England with father George and sister Mary.

She married Thomas William Thorpe on November 28, 1896. The ceremony was held at Christ Church in Harpurhey, Lancashire, England presided by rector John Leighton. Sarah was a 25 year old machinist living at 91 Conran Street in Harpurhey, Manchester at the time.

Sarah left England at age 41 aboard the Empress of Ireland. She arrived in Quebec, Canada in July 1913. Traveling with her were her children Olive, Gertrude, Herbert, and Rhoda. Her husband and son left the previous year.

Sarah and her family move to the United States by the time her son is born in 1915.

Sarah is shown as living at 1855 Center Line, Detroit, Michigan on her son George's World War I draft card.

During the time of the 1920 United States Census, Sarah is 48 years old and lives in Charlton, Otsego County, Michigan. It shows she can read and write. She lives with husband Thomas and children George, Gertrude, Herbert, Rhoda, and Foden.

The 1930 United States Census shows 58 year old Sarah living in Detroit, Michigan with husband Thomas and children Herbert, Rhoda, and Foden.

Sarah passed away on May 31, 1935 in Gaylord, Michigan. She was 63 years old.

Name originally found in marriage record of daughter Gertrude Thorpe - November 11, 1922.
