WILLIAM DUNK William Dunk, caretaker of the Waverley Church since 1901, passed away at the War Memorial Hospital after a short illness on Sunday, 15th July, aged 95. Born in Newtown on 20th March,1850, Mr. Dunk lived all his life in and around Sydney, mainly in the suburbs of Newtown, Paddington, Marrickville, and Waverley. His partner in life and work was, before their marriage in 1874, Miss Amelia Small, whose brother, Rev. A. J. Small, was an early missionary in Fiji. She is a dear, gracious soul, who, at the age of 93, is still mentally bright. The Dunk family have been most popular with all the ministers and people connected with the Waverley Church during their forty-four years' residence there. Apart from their every day duties — and the position of caretaker of the beautiful church at Bondi Junction carried with it big responsibilities, — they have always shown great willingness to help whenever there was a social, tea meeting, or any other event where they might be of service. The trustees, too have a lot to thank the Dunks for, as the minutes have shown on numerous occasions. Mr. Dunk was very active up till a few months of his death. He was a real handyman, and was in his element at his bench in the workshop in the basement of the church. Many of the stalls used at the church fetes were the product of his carpentry skill. He was a 'fully persuaded' Christian, a product of the class meeting which was the strength of Methodism in earlier, days, and the Bible was his daily companion. Blessed with keen mental faculties to the last, he was conscious that his earthly journey was nearing its end as bodily weakness became apparent, but he had no doubt that his Friend was there to welcome him on the other side. Rev. R. J. Williams, who spoke, at the private service, told of his boyhood as sociation with Mr. Dunk at Marrickville, and paid a tender tribute to the fine Christian qualities of this 'patriarch.' Rev. Alan Walker, M.A., conducted the service at the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium.
