"Renowned artist, land preservationist, and beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Lucie Cross "Toss" Dunlap Chandler, age 88, passed away at her home in Versailles, surrounded by loved ones, following a long battle with Alzheimer's.
"Born on February 7, 1934, in Scott County, she was raised on the farm of her parents Whitney and Lady Louise (Boswell) Dunlap located on Pisgah Pike in Woodford County. Her family is one of the earliest pioneer families to settle in Woodford County; the farm was established in 1784. Toss lived on the farm until she attended college at the University of Kentucky where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. Prior to that, she attended Margaret Hall in Versailles and University High School in Lexington. She went on to study interior design at the University of Kentucky and trained at the prestigious Ringling School of Art in Florida. Toss married Albert B. "Ben" Chandler, Jr. on September 8, 1957. Toss had a successful career as an artist, which continued until her illness prevented her from painting. Her work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Kentucky and other states, and is owned by serious collectors, institutions and museums. One of her favorite and most historically significant commissions was "Twelve Months of Tobacco," depicting in oil on canvas and in a realistic style, the farming of tobacco from seed to auction. Aside from its remarkable value as art, the 12-piece series documents the now nearly lost process of growing burley tobacco.
"Toss was equally creative as a land preservationist, doing much of the grunt and leg work in an effort to preserve Woodford County's rural, unique landscape. She was a passionate advocate at Woodford Planning Commission, Fiscal Court and City Council meetings. Toss was well-known for her land conservation successes – chief among them being the establishment of the nationally recognized Pisgah Rural Historic District.
"Toss will be remembered as a loving, fun and generous mother and grandmother, and a dear friend to many. She was the life of every party and a true force of nature. Toss was preceded in death by her partner in life, husband Ben. They had three children, all boys. Whitney Dunlap Chandler (Shaoqian Zhang, Ph.D.) preceded her in death. She is survived by sons, former Congressman Albert B. "Ben" Chandler III (Jennifer Romine) and Matthew Cross Chandler; her grandchildren, Lucie Brasher Chandler, Albert B. Chandler IV, Russell Branham Chandler, and Gaius Wenbing Chandler; and a beloved niece, Erin Chandler, along with several other nieces and nephews. Toss's passing came at the final deadline for The Woodford Sun. Bob Vlach will have a more in-depth In Memoriam feature next week.
"A service will be held this Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 3PM at Pisgah Presbyterian Church, 710 Pisgah Pike, where she and Ben were married. Rev. Hannah McIntyre will officiate. A reception will immediately follow in the Pisgah Presbyterian Academy Building.
"In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Pisgah Historic Association, c/o Whitney Dunlap III, 2485 Pisgah Pike, Versailles, Kentucky, 40383."
