  • . RAILWAY ACCIDENT A FETTLER KILLED.

At about 10 o'clock on Saturday morning a fettler named' David John Dunning, was run over and killed by a train on the railway line between Awaba and Dora Creek. It appears that early in the. morning an engine left' the line near Wyong, and assistance was asked from Newcastle A break-down train-was immediately despatched to the scene. Dunning, who was at Awaba at. the time, ,took a tricycle and proceeded along the line with the intention. of going on to Wyong. Before leaving he is said to have asked an official at Awaba if any train would be passing through, and was .told, so it is stated, that there would be one in about five minutes time. He then proceeded on his journey, and when going through one of the cuttings he was overtaken by the break-down train, which ran over him.The train was brought to a stop; and an examination showed that the man had been severely injured.: There was a very, deep wound In' the back of his head, which was also badly crushed. There was a gash on the right knee and extensive bruises about the body.' He was placed on the train and taken to Wyong, but died before-arriving there. The fatality, was reported to Newcastle, and the. body was subsequently brought- in here and placed in the city. morgue. The matter was then reported ,to Mr Martin, District Coroner, who decided to hold an inquest that night. The Railway- officials, .however, stated that it, would be impossible to secure their witnesses ,in time; as none of. them were in Newcastle.. The men, it was pointed out to the coroner, had; gone to their homes-some in Sydney, and the others at Wyong. They could not be in attendance before Monday afternoon. Mr. Martin then ascertained that the relatives of deceased proposed to carry out the interment to-day, and decided that he would open the inquest at Watt's Family Hotel, Islington, at a quarter-past 10 this morning. In the meantime, the coroner gave authority for the body to be removed from the morgue, and it has taken to the deceased's late residence at Mitchell street, Tighe's Hill. The deceased was a married man, and leaves a wife and one child.
