Biography

Mary's nickname was Polly, a variant of Molly, which is the pet form of Mary. This nickname was widely used for Mary up through the early 1900s. Mary "Polly" was the wife of Capt. John Imes, married Nov. 20, 1825 in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. They moved to the Buncombe District of Clarke Co., Georgia by 1850 then to Old Milton County (now Fulton Co.) some time after 1860. Together they had 7 children: William Rhennard Imes, John Pinckney Imes, Reuben Howard Imes, James Howard Imes, Elizabeth Mildred Imes (Turner), Catherine Weston Imes (Walker) and Mary Susan Imes (Ferguson). Mary "Polly" was the daughter of Reuben Rainey Eads/Eades and Elizabeth (Betsy) Sorrow both born in Virgnia & died in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. I am unable to locate the burial location for Capt. John Imes who died Mary 17, 1874 in Jackson or Clarke Co., Georgia. At the time of his death John was married to his 2nd wife Frances Rebecca Simonton, whom he married Nov 15, 1865 in Clarke Co., Georgia. Together they had a daughter Mary Frances Imes born Feb. 11, 1872 in Jackson Co., Georgia.

John Imes was an active officer in the Georgia Militia according to records on file in the Georgia Archives. His first appointment came at the age of 28, while he was a resident of Oglethorpe Co., Georgia about six months before he married Mary "Polly" Eads. John Imes, Gentlemen was appointed as Second Lieutenant of the 237th District Company, Ga. Militia, on May 3, 1825 by Governor George W. Troupe (from Georgia Military Records, 1825-1827, Page 164, Drawer 40, Box 6, Microfilm, Georgia Dept of Archives and History.) The 237th Militia District was also known as the Glade District. Some 12 years later at the age of 40, Lieutenant John Imes was advanced to the rank of Captain in the Georgia Militia. From Georgia Militia Records for 1836-1838, Page 470, Georgia Archives on June 28, 1837 he received his appointment by Governor William Schley as Captain of the 238th Georgia Militia District in Goosepond to run to February 2, 1838. His first Lt. was John Baker and 2nd Lt. was John Johnson.
