Biography

Richard was born about 1805. He was christened in 1805 (name given as Richard Coul Earle) in Totnes, Devon, England. Father's Name: Robert Earle, Mother's Name: Jane.^[1]

He married Mary Ann Lloyd in 1832.^[2]

On Matilda's baptism record, Richard and Mary Ann's residence is given as Abham and Richard is listed as a farmer there in the 1841 Census.^[3]

In the Devon 1851 census he is described as: Richard Coull Earle Age: 45 Born In: 1806 Profession: Farmer of 200 Acres Employing 7 Labourers. Also present are: Mary Ann Earle (Farmers Wife), 48y b.1803 Bristol, Gloucestershire; Mary Jane Earle (Daughter) 14y, b.1837 Staverton, Devon; Robert Charles Earle (Son) 9y, b.1842 Staverton, Devon; Elizabeth Quick (Aunt) Widow 77y, b. 1774 Totnes, Devon; Elizabeth Yabbicom [Yabbacombe] (Cousin) Unmarried 24y, b.1827 Totnes, Devon; Maria Elizabeth Lloyd (Niece) Unmarried 16y, b.1835 Bristol, Gloucestershire plus one House Servant and one Farm Labourer.^[4]

In the 1861 census he is retired and living in Ashprington, Devonshire, England: EARLE Richard Coull Head, Married, 55yr, Retired Farmer Devon - Totnes (Originally: Devon - Totness) EARLE Mary Ann, Wife, 58yr born Gloucestershire - Bristol EARLE Maria Elizabeth, Dau Unmarried, 22yrs, born Devon - Staverton. Four servants also listed.^[5]

In the 1871 census he is Head, Married, 65yr, living in Paignton, Retired Farmer. Others present are: Mary A Earle, Wife, 69yrs. Mary A Farr, Daughter, 34yrs - I suspect this to be Mary Faro, possibly misspelt. Richard S H Farr, Grandson, 4yrs, born Barnstaple, Devonshire.^[6]

By the 1891 census Richard was 85yrs, widowed and living at 2 Southfield Rd, Totnes. He was of independent means and employed two servants.^[7] He died at the age of 90.
