Biography

Sam Early is a part of US Black heritage.

Sam was a slave of Joel Early Jr.

His birth year is approximated at 1810. Age approximation based on (a) being born after 1806 (b) being a youthful male in 1835 (not yet having a trade or such that would command higher valuation).

He would have been recorded in the 1830 census of Greene County, Georgia as one of the slaves of Joel Early Jr.

Joel Early Jr worked with the American Colonization Society. Joel offered emancipation and transportation to Liberia in conjunction with the American Colonization Society. There were 30 takers who traveled to Liberia on the Brig Montgomery's Company. Some of these who emigrated to Liberia may have been kin to Sam Early.

There are records in the probate court of Greene County, Georgia dated on and around June 24, 1835. In these records Joel Early Jr is referred to as Lunatic. These court documents contain an inventory of the estate of Joel Early Jr. Sam is among the enslaved persons listed. "Sam $700".

Sam died some time after he was recorded in the 1835 probate records. He was not recorded in the probate records of Joel Early Jr when he died in 1851.
