Biography

Augustine was born in 1750. He is the son of Thomas Eastin and Sarah Whitlock. He passed away in 1833. [1]

Augustine was a Baptist preacher. At one time he was arrested and confined in the jail at Richmond, Virginia, for preaching to the British soldiers; His persistance threatened to get him shot. Shortly after being discharged from the Army of the American Revolution, Augustine, a minister, left Virginia in 1784 with a party of emigants desiring to settle in Kentucky. The wife of General James Taylor was with the Eastin party. Another large party of emigrants caught up with them one evening, and they were encouraged to band with his group, as Eastin`s party had seen signs that Indians were near and might attack. Sentries would be posted. The other party dismissed the warning, but later that night, more than 40 emigrants were killed and/or scalped. Augustine Eastins party apparently made it safely to Kentucky. Augustine was witness to the wills of Andrew Barton (drawn 06/16/1829, wife Jane), Jesse Bowles (drawn 03/29/1820), and Nathaniel Parish (drawn 04/13/1810).

Marriage

He married Mary Ford ,daughter of Thomas Ford,Sept.5,1772,Goochland,Virginia.[2][3]

When Jean Batiste Hector D’Estaing-Count d'Estaing came over with the French fleet during Revolutionary War, the Reverend Augustine Eastin saw him in Richmond, Virginia, and recognized the Count's coat-of-arms: being the same as that borne by his own family in England, giving credence to the story that the migration was indeed France to England, perhaps to Scotland, and thence to America confirmed their belief that the family was of noble birth. After [James Garrard] moved to Kentucky in 1783, he was ordained as a Baptist minister and served for a time as minister of the nearby Coopers Run Church. In 1791, he with the Rev. Augustine Eastin and the Rev. Ambrose Dudley formed a comittee that presented to the Elkhorn Association a memorial and remonstrance in favor of excluding slavery from the Commonwealth by constitutional enactment. [This being said, please note that Augustin dedicated much of his final will to the disposition of several of his slaves, as well as mentioning slaves he had given to his children in former years. At the very end of his will he asked that the children of certain slaves be free at the age of 25 "provided said (children) shall conduct themselves well."][4][5]

Augustine Eastin was its first pastor, so far as known. Under his ministry it attained a membership of ninety-five, in 1802. But the next year it divided, in consequence of Mr. Eastin's having introduced the Arian* doctrine among its members. About thirty members adhered to the recreant pastor, and formed themselves into what would now be called a Unitarian Church. This faction, after the death of its leader, united with the Campbellites.[6]

Will

In the name of God, Amen. I Augustine Eastin being in health of Body and of Sound mind and memory to prevent disturbances among my heirs do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following: To wit:

My will is that all my just debts be consienciously paid Four pounds Four Shillings lodged with me by a certain Joseph Watkins of Goochland County Virginia to defray the expenses of the lands of a certain Matthew Page of Hannover County Virginia which lands were to be surveyed by Col. Robert Johnson of Scott County of this State. Col. Johnson never called for the money in his lifetime. The money is therefore to be Returned to said Matthew Page or his Heirs By the heirs of Executors of said Joseph Watkins they giving up my receipt but no interest to be paid thereon as the money was only lodged with me for the above purposes. I gave a note to a certain Robert Coleman of Virginia for Ten pounds some time in the year 1772 or 1773, when I left Virginia I advertised my Intention of removing and requested all debts to be brought in for payment this note never has been presented nor do I know what is become of it. But if it is ever presented my Heirs must consienciously pay it off according to the then existing laws of Virginia which was 5 percent for twenty years and then Interest ceased. I have written different letters to Virginia on account of this note but it has never been presented. Mr. Coleman told me he had assigned it to some merchantile house in Goochland. In addition to what I have already given to my Son Zachariah Eastin viz 150 acres of land and a negro girl Viner to which I add a negro Boy Tim Milley’s Child and confirm the whole to him and his Heirs forever. I have given to my Daughter Dolly G. Rule now deceased 115 aces of Land which she sold and purchased other lands in Pendleton county and other things besides. Now give unto her two daughters viz. Judith and Molly Rule to Judith a negro girl America and to Molly Rule a negro girl Milly both Chariteys children and request their Father William Rule to give unto his son Augustine Rule who is my grandson the land I gave my Daughter Dolly G. Rule or its value in other lands. The above negro girls given to Judith and Molly Rule with their future increase I give unto them and their heirs in the line of their deceased mother forever. Having given unto my son Thomas Eastin at different times about $1,000 and all the benefits arising to me from a suit in the Woodford Circuit Court provided he pays all the expences of said suit and forgive him all debts due me by Bond or otherwise! Now give him my watch and 10 sheep to him and his heirs forever. I have given to my daughter Elizabeth Gray a lot of land and my house in which I now live and other things In a deed record in the Bourbon County Courts Clerks office to which I now add all the Rails on the fence running round the orchard known in my family by the name of the Young orchard and all the rails on that string of Fence running by the gate in a line proscribed for her lot of land to Alen Tharps fence. I also give her my clock to her and her heirs.

I give unto my daughter Polly Hargert one negro lad Albert, Milley’s child to her and her heirs and assigns forever.

My will is that all the ballance of my land and the ballance of my estate of whatever kind or description except the grave yard and my books be sold and after my son Augustin pays four hundred and twenty dollars, Polly Hargart and Kitty W. N. Rogers, America Mullen pays 300 dollars each and Judith Patty pays two hundred dollars out of the sale or each gives credit for the sums mentioned above and two hundred reserved for purposed hereafter mentioned and my debts are paid then I give the ballance to them viz. my son Augustin and my daughters Polly Hargate, Kitty W. N. Rogers, America Mullen and Judith Patty share and share alike to them and their heirs forever they providing to take care of old Doshea as the condition of the above gifts and let her live in her present is she chooses.

The above two hundred dollars reserved I wish to be put to interest and kept in reserve to pay Robert Colemans note 10 franks and Brittish debt of ten or eleven pounds which has never been presented to me for payment and kept in reserve for at least ten years and if never heard of divided among all the last mentioned children or their heirs.

The grave yard as marked out and to extend in a direct line to the creek I give to my children without the power of transferring it forever and all my books to be equally divided amongst the whole of them and lastly I do appoint my friends James Jarrard and Joseph M. Kinnard executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former will or wills whatsoever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the 21st of June 1833.

Augustin Eastin {seal}

In the presence of: Jane Lightfoot, Samuel Hildreth, William Allentharp.

Since writing my last will dated the 21st of June 1833 which is attested by Jane Lightfoot, Samual Hildreth and William Allentharp I have concluded to make a few alterations in it and make them by this codicil. In that will I gave Judith Rule a negro girl named America and to Molly Rule a negro girl named Milley together with their future increase. I now direct that the future increase of said two negro girls shall be free at the age of twenty five years provided said increase shall conduct themselves well.

I give to my daughter Betsey Gray my negro man Dick and my negro woman Charity. I therefore revoke that part of my will by which said Charity was given to Joseph M. Kinnard. Thomas Eastin my son has already received the ten sheep I gave him in my will and is not to get any more sheep. To explain that part of my will which directs my son Augustin Eastin to pay four hundred and twenty dollars and my daughters to pay the sums mentioned as to them before they come in for an equal division of the residue of my estate as mentioned I would state that Augustin Eastin has received $420 in money from me. My daughter Judith Patty received $200 in money from me and the negro boy Albert given by said will to my daughter Polly Hargart I estimate at $300. And my daughters Kitty W. N. Rogers and America Mullen received from me some years ago a negro girl each which negro girls I estimate at $300 each. My meaning in that will then is that Polly Hargert, America Mullen and Judith Patty shall each receive out of the ballance of my estate mentioned in said will as much as my son Augustin has received as above mentioned before a final division is made. In reciving as much as Augustin has received it in my will that the sums mentioned above and given to said three daughters respectively are to be considered as composing a part of their resepective sums of $420. So soon as said 3 daughters shall thus have been made equal to my son Augustin then they and said Augustin are to divide said ballance of my estate specified in that will equally among them to share and share alike. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of October 1833. Att: John G. Martin, Joseph M. Kinnard.
