Biography

William was born in 1871. He is the son of Archibold Edgar and Agness Black

William Edgar is mentioned in the Hartlepool History There and Now, underShiping Companies.[1] He is part of the Company Casper Edgar and Company of Hartlepool, which was founded in the early 1870's, They were formed to cover shipbroking and agency in Middlesborough. Some of their ships that were registered at Hartlepool are the Allie, Holmwood,Lizzie and Minnie.

William was elected Mayor of West Hartlepool in 1917.

The family were living in Stranton, Hartlepool in 1881. Archibold and Agness, his wife was there including children Douglas b.1864 in Scotland was a Clerk in a Coal Fitters Office, Phillis M b.1867 in Stranton, Nephew William Black b.1864 in Newcastle, a Engine Fitter in a Saw Mill and Neice Helen Black b.1869 in Newcastle.[2]

William was a Shipbrokers Clerk during the 1891 census. He was living in Hartlepool with his father and mother and a Niece Helen Black b. 1869 in Northumberland.[3]

William and Annie Mabel Elliot were married in Hartlepool in 1898.[4]

In 1901 William was a Steamship Broker in Hartlepool. He was living in West Hartlepool with his wife Annie M, son Douglas b.in 1901 and a servent Margaret Robinson b. 1883 in Hartlepool [5]

During the 1911 census William and his wife were living in West Hartlepool with their children Dougls, William, and Malcolm with servants Florance Hanna Micol and Annie Wilgress. [6]

William was living at 'Holmwood' Kent Road, Harrogate when he died aged 48 on the 15th December 1918. Leaving effects of £102,783.

William Edgar On the 15th inst., at Holmewood, Kent Road, Harrogate, William, the dearly beloved husband of Annie E Edgar, aged 48 years. cortege to leave west Hartlepool railway station, Wednesday, 10-15am, for service at Presbyterian Church, Park Road. friends kindly accept this (the only) intimation. Buried in Stranton Grange cemetery, West Hartlepool. notice cost DOUBLE because the person did not get to the office in time for print dead-line - appeared on back page under late advertisements.
