Biography

1558 Birth and Parents

Richard Edlyn was born no later than 1558. This birth year is an estimate based on his father's death the following year -- the Find A Grave site states Richard Edlyn was the son of William Edlyn who died in 1559. [1]

However, Todd Whitesides gives an alternate parentage, making Richard Edlyn the son of Richard Edlyn (d. 1617), yeoman, of Pinner Marsh, Middlesex and his wife Joane Redinge. [2]

Geni shows Richard as Richard Edlyn, Jr, born in Pinner Marsh, Harrow on the Hill, London, Middlesex, Eng. in 1565. [3] Son of Richard A P Edlyn, Sr and Joane or Jane Edlyn

Nordstrom agrees that Richard Edlyn was of Pinner Marsh, County Middlesex. [4]

For Norstrom, however, his parents were William and Joan Edlyn. [4]

It should be noted that no primary sources document the parents of Richard Edlyn and that his parents should be considered uncertain.

Harrow

The will of Phillip Edelen's father, Richard Edlyn (d. 1616), states that he was "of Pynnor marshe in the parish of Harrow on the hill in the Countye of Midlesex..." The will of this Richard's father, William Edlyn (d. 1558), states that he was "of Pynner in the paryshe of Harrow on the Hyll in the County of Middlesex..." [5]

Harrow-on-the-Hill is a parish in what was Gore Hundred, Middlesex. The villages of Greenhill, Roxeth, and Kenton fall within its boundary. Pinner Marsh is simply a placename for an area near Pinner, which is a town and its own parish. Formerly, Pinner fell within the jurisdiction of Harrow.

Also, Phillip Edelen's uncle-in-law, Sir Christopher Clitherow (1578-1641), knt., Lord Mayor of London, kept a residence in Pinner, and in fact died there on 11 Nov 1641. In Clitherow's will (P.C.C. 140 Evelyn) this bequest is made: "Cousin Mrs. Catherine Edlin and to all her brothers and sisters, the children of deceased sister Mrs Anne Offley, 40 shillings for a ring." [5]

Denham, Buckinghamshire

Both his sister, Joan “Hannah” (Edlyn), wife of Richard Nicholas, and his daughter, Ann Edelen, wife of James Hills, lived at Denham. His sons stayed with one or the other and were educated at Denham. For a period of time, less than one year, Edlyn was rector of Pinner after being driven out of his Church of St. John Zachary in London, by the puritans of Oliver Cromwell because he was a royalist and loyal to the bishops of the Church of England. Some years later he became reconciled with the new Parliament and became rector of St. Michael Bassishan in London, where he remained until his death in 1656. His daughter, Ann, married James Hills of Pinner, County Middlesex in that Church. [4]

1595 Marriage

About 1595, [6] Richard Edlyn married Margaret. Numerous sources agree that the wife of Richard Edlyn / Edelen was Margaret, but none are aware of her family name. [6][3][4]

1616 Will and Death

Richard Edlyn, yeoman, of Pinner Marsh and Bury Pond Hill left a will dated 5 Aug. 1616 and proved 27 August 1616. [7]

  1. Richard, named first in father's 1616 will. He held lands in Hillingdon, County Middlesex, probably inherited from his widowed mother, who lived at Hillingdon after her husband’s death. Richard’s will, dated 5 June 1669 was proved at London 1 Nov. 1669. His will was sealed with the Edelin Coat of Arms: Ermine, a Fess Vairy, or and Gules. His nephew, Richard Edelen of Maryland, used the same Coat of Arms on the door of his coach, which was destroyed by fire in 1927 at Mount Airy, Maryland. The Crest was a Swan’s head between two wings, argent. [4] Richard Edelin married Sarah ________

Edelen Legends

Todd Whitesides writes:

I want to warn you to be wary of accepting all the tales repeated about the Edelens on the various forums and in some printed sources. I have corresponded with a couple of very serious Edelen researchers for nearly twenty years, and have come to respect their reserve in accepting all the family stories floating around out there. [8]

Yes, Phillippe Edelen held three degrees, was an ordained minister of the Church of England, and was a published writer [of a sort]. But his church was not sacked and looted by the Parliamentarians, he was merely ejected from his ministry. This was common practice for rectors whose political philosophy didn't match the current regime. Puritans had been ejected for non-conformity for several years before the House of Commons ejected the Stuarts. [8]

I have many files on the early origin of the Edelen family that have been supplied to me over the years by Crolian William Edelen. He was kind enough to begin sharing his research on the Edelens with me when I was a teenager, and luckily I have been able to supply him with new information recently on our mutual ancestry. [8]

The fantasy of Elizabeth Banton being a daughter of a "Lord Pannewell" originated years ago because a descendant in Maryland had the middle name of Pannewell. No further connection has been found to this illusory Lord Pannewell. [8]

Before perpetuating more fluff on the family I am hoping more people will dig deeper into the available documentation to be had on our ancestors in London and its environs. There is a lot of good source material on this family out there. [8]

Is there anyone actively working on the ancestry of Phillippe Edelen (ca 1598-1656) and his wife Katherine Offley (1600-????)? Philippe's line back to his grandfather William Edlyn (d. 1558) has been substantiated nicely, and Katherine's ancestry (including the lines Offley, Harding, Clitherow, Hewett, and Hawks) is continuing to fill in. [9]

Also interested in tracking Katherine's descendants in Virginia by her first husband, William Brewster "the younger" (ca 1581-1624). After this first marriage she married in 1629 at the parish church near her father's country home to Phillippe Edelen. Her father was Thomas Offley, Esq (1564-1630) of Aldgate Ward, London, and Leyton, Essex; her mother Anne Clitherow (1576-1638). [9]

Am also interested in gathering more biographical detail on these people, including Phillippe and Katherine's son Richard Edelen, gent (ca. 1639-1695), an attorney and deputy surveyor, as well as being described in the Maryland archives as "a knowne Papist." [9]
