Biography

Hugh was born about 1789 in York County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joseph Edmundson and Rebecca Kennedy.[1]

In 1790, the family lived in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania. His father was listed in the census as Joseph Demondson [Edmundson] enumerating 1 male >= 16 (Joseph), 7 males < 16 (sons Caleb, Eli, James, William, Joseph, John, Hugh), 1 female (wife Rebecca).[2]

In 1800, the family continued to live in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania. His father was listed in the census as Jos Edmundson enumerating 2 males age 0-10 (sons Isaac and Thomas), 2 [3] males age 11-16 (sons Joseph, John and Hugh), 2 males age 17-26 (sons Caleb and William), 1 male age 27-45 (Joseph, 45), 2 females age 0-10 (daughters Catherine and Rebecca), 1 female age 27-45 (wife Rebecca, 43). His brothers Eli and James were not enumerated suggesting that they had died sometime before 1800.[3]

By 1810, the family was living in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His father was listed in the census as Joseph Edmonson [Edmundson] enumerating 1 male age 11-16 (son Thomas), 4 males age 17-26 (sons Joseph, John, Hugh and Isaac), 1 male age 45+ (Joseph, 55), 1 female age 11-16 (daughter Rebecca), 1 female age 17-26 (daughter Catherine), 1 female age 45+ (wife Rebecca, 53). His brother Caleb was also listed in the census for Elizabeth Township while his brother William was listed in the census for Versailles Township.[4]

On 25 October 1813, Caleb, William, Joseph, John, Hugh and Isaac Edmundson bought 65 acres of land in Elizabeth Township from George and Isabella (Kennedy) Sill that their daughter Sarah Sill (deceased) had inherited from her grandfather William Kennedy Sr in his will dated 12 March 1787. Hugh's mother was the niece of Isabella (Kennedy) Sill. Hugh and his brothers bought the land for two thousand six hundred seventy dollars, recorded 24 November 1813.[5]

in 1820, the family continued to live in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His father was listed in the census as Joseph Edmiston [Edmundson] next to brother Caleb Edminston [Edmundson] enumerating 1 male age 17-26 (son Thomas), 1 male age 27-45 (son Hugh), 1 male age 45+ (Joseph, 65), 2 females age 17-26 (daughters Catherine and Rebecca), 1 female age 45+ (wife Rebecca, 63). His brother Isaac was listed on the same census page. His brothers Caleb, William and John were also listed in the census for Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvana, while his brother Joseph was listed in the census for St. Clair Township.[6]

Hugh married his second cousin Sarah McDonald about 1821 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. They were the parents of at least five children, all born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Two of their children were known. They were:

  1. John, b. 16 Nov 1824, d. 16 May 1904 in Alleghey County, PA;
  2. Christina, b. 1828, m. Ezra Phillips, d. 21 Dec 1897 in Lawrence County, PA.

In 1830, he and his family were living in Versailles Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was listed in the census as Hugh Edmanson [Edmundson] enumerating 1 male age 0-5 (son, 4), 2 males age 5-10 (son John, 6; son, 8), 1 male age 40-50 (Hugh, 41), 1 female age 0-5 (daughter Christina, 2), 1 female age 20-30 (wife Sarah, 30).[7]

He died on 16 October 1838 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was buried at Edmundson Cemetery in Glassport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

On 20 June 1844, Hugh was named as Hugh Edmundson intermarried with Sarah McDonald in his wife's father Alexander McDonald's will in Pine Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Sarah's mother inherited the estate, which would be divided equally among the children or grandchildren two years after her death.[8]
