Robert Jewell Edney passed away at the age of 74 on 29 September 1866[1][2][15] in Deersville, Harrison County, Ohio, United States[1][2]
The below information about Robert and his parents is likely from either the book "Pittis Genealogy"[2] by Margaret Birney or the Baker Family History Website[1].
"William EDNEY and his wife Sarah JEWELL were married 14 October 1779 in ROMSEY, in Hampshire, England. Later, they lived in a place supposedly called, "The farm at Herney". William EDNEY also had a coal mine, and was known as "The coal merchant".
Their son Robert EDNEY, was born at Milton, Parish of Portsea, Hampshire, England. Since William and Sarah JEWELL EDNEY were married in 1779, and Robert EDNEY wasn't born until 1792, I feel there must have been other children born in the intervening years.
Robert EDNEY was christened at Kingston Church, Milton, Parish of Portsea, Hampshire, England, and became a school teacher.
Emigrated to the USA in 1819 on Resolution, chartered by Mary's Father, John Pittis
Robert and his wife and daughter settled in Deersville the same year as their arrival. He opened a general store but as there was little money in circulation he did not succeed as a merchant. He kept a hotel until his death called the Travelers' Rest, at the north-east corner of the two main intersecting streets.
Mr. Edney was also postmaster for many years and served as county auditor for four years, 1845-49. “His records were so well kept and written in such beautiful script as to remain an honor to his memory and an exhibit of fine early records.”
Robert’s father left his considerable estate to him (£9000 and the farm called "Edney at Herney"), but just as Robert’s son, Henry, was to go to England and lay claim to the inheritance, Henry was taken ill and died. Robert had naturalization problems and his wife was opposed to him taking a sea voyage to push his claim. In 1866 he was stricked with paralysis and died. After his death, the will, which had been in his possession when he came to America, was given to an attorney (Scott) in Cadiz. When the attorney died, the will was never found. The case was then placed with Kinney & Billman, attorneys in Cleveland, who gave the family the statement of facts above. This was given to Mary Birney Pittis who wrote to officials in England and placed the case with Attorney Marlatt of Cleveland (who had considerable success in claiming old estates in England for American heirs). Because of the great lapse of time and lack of documentary evidence the claim could not be proven, and the estate had probably been taken over by the Chancery long ago.
No-one has been able to identify where Herney might be. It was probably not in Hampshire, since William Edney was known to have owned a coal mine, and there are no coal deposits in Hampshire. Possible that it was in Kent (Herne?) or Nottinghamshire, where there are significant coal deposits.
