Why is James listed as “the third” when his father does not have the same name?

James Hedreen
He is listed as James Henry Edsall III on familysource.org. However, the 1804 marriage record for him shows him as "James Edsall Jr". I don't know the reason for the discrepancy. Note that his father may have gone by James despite that being his middle name
