Biography

Scroop (sometimes Scrope or Scroope) Egerton was born on 11 August 1681, the fourth but eldest surviving son of John Egerton, 3rd Earl of Bridgwater,[1] and the third son of his second wife, Jane Powlett. He was baptised on 14 August 1681 at St Giles's, Cripplegate.

He held the courtesy title of Viscount Brackley, from 1687 when his elder brother died aged 11, and succeeded his father as 4th Earl of Bridgwater 19 March 1700/01, He was appointed as Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire from 1701-1711 and again from 1714 - 1728,

He held a number of court posts under both Queen Anne, and King George I including; Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Prince George of Denmark 1703-1705; Master of the Horse to Prince George 1705-1708, for which post he received £1,000 per annum[2]; Lord Chamberlain to Caroline, Princess of Wales (later Queen consort of George II) 1714-1717, and finally appointed as Lord of the Bedchamber to King George I 1719 to 1727.

He was created 1st Duke of Bridgwater, county Somerset, and Marquess of Brackley, count Northampton on 18 June 1720

First marriage and children

He married Lady Elizabeth Churchill, the third daughter and co-heir of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and his wife Sarah Jennings on 9 February 1703.

She was born about 1687 and died of smallpox 22 March 1714, and was buried at Little Gaddesden, 29 March that year, aged 26

They had three children;

  1. John Egerton, born 3 February 1703/04, held courtesy title of Viscount Brackley, died while at school at Eton 30 January 1718/19 and was buried aged 15 at Little Gaddesden, 5 February 1718/1719.
  2. Son, unnamed, died soon after he was born;[citation needed]
  3. Lady Anne Egerton, married (1) 22 April 1725 at Ashridge, Buckinghamshire, Wriothesley Russell, 3rd Duke of Bedford, died 23 October 1732; (2) 23 June 1733 at St James's, Westminster, William Villiers, Earl of Jersey;[3]

Second marriage and children

Scroop Egerton, married secondly 4 August 1722, Lady Rachael Russell, daughter of Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedford, and his wife Elizabeth Howland They had eight children;

  1. Lady Louisa Egerton, born 30 April 1723, married 28 March 1748, Granville Leveson, 1st Marquess of Stafford;
  2. Lady Carolina Egerton, born 21 May 1724, died unmarried;
  3. Charles Egerton, born 27 July 1725, held courtesy title of Marquess of Brackley, died young 2 May 1731 of small pox after an innoculation[3];
  4. John Egerton, born 29 April 1727, succeeded his father as 2nd Duke of Bridgwater, died unmarried 26 February 1747/48 of fever, and was buried 4 March 1747/48 at Little Gaddesden;[3]
  5. Lord William Egerton, born 15 January 1728/29, died young 19 February 1728/29;
  6. Lord Thomas Egerton, born 18 April 1730, died young 1 May 1730;
  7. Lady Diana Egerton, born 3 March 1731/32, married 9 March 1753, Frederick, Lord Baltimore
  8. Francis Egerton, born 21 May 1736, succeeded his brother as 3rd Duke of Bridgwater.
